Comeback travels Pathe to production
Branagh presents Orange award to scribe Wright
LONDON — Bernard Wright’s screenplay “Frankie’s Comeback” has won the first Pathe Production Prize, which guarantees that the script will be filmed by Pathe Pictures.
The project is a comedy about a washed-up showman whose disappearing act is losing its glamour. Wright is a 38-year-old former actor with the Royal Shakespeare Co. who has never had a script produced.
Pathe Pictures, one of the U.K.’s three lottery franchises, is hoping to shoot “Frankie’s Comeback” this summer if a producer, director and cast can be nailed down in time.
‘Original and imaginative’
“Bernard is a truly original and imaginative writing talent, and we are delighted that the prize has given us the opportunity of working with him,” commented Andrea Calderwood, Pathe’s head of production.
Wright’s script was one of three winners of the inaugural Orange Prize for Screenwriting, which forms the short list for the Pathe Production Prize. Pathe spends some time developing the three Orange winners before choosing which one to greenlight.

Wright was presented the award by Kenneth Branagh and Pathe managing director Alexis Lloyd at London’s Odeon West End Cinema prior to the charity premiere of Branagh’s “Love’s Labour’s Lost.”
